Have You Heard Of Shilajit?

What Is Shilajit?

Shilajit is a dark black organic mineral composite found in extremely high elevations. It is created over millions of years through natural geothermal and biochemical processes, breaking down plant matter and minerals. It is an important drug of the ancient Ayurvedic materia medica and it is to this day used extensively by Ayurvedic physicians for a variety of diseases.  Both human and animal studies support its use as a “revitalizer,” enhancing physical performance and relieving fatigue with enhanced production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Additionally, research has shown shilajit has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as well as some studies suggesting shilajit may decrease the risk of dementia and improve cognitive processing. This is likely because shilajit is rich in fulvic acid, which is known to enhance memory. Researchers are continuing to study shilajit’s potential benefits in slowing down the progression of dementia in people with Alzheimer’s disease. One study found postmenopausal women with osteopenia (low bone mineral density) who took shilajit supplements on a daily basis saw significant improvements in bone density after 11 months. Researchers theorize this effect could be due to shilajit's ability to speed up cell turnover.

While research is limited and ongoing, there is no question that a good quality shialjit supplement truly nourishes the body at the cellular level. With over 40 minerals and substances, most notably fulvic acid, shilajit helps to meet 80% of our daily mineral requirements, while the other 20% can be found in a diet high in seasonal fruits, high quality meat and dairy, and root vegetables. It is especially important for us to prioritize mineral consumption in today's world, given our American diets and our poor soil quality.
